한국 정부는 다양한 방면으로 대기업과 중소기업의 오픈 이노베이션을 활성화 시키기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 서울특별시 공식 웹사이트에 따르면, 서울시는 2019년부터 서울창업허브공덕, 서울바이오허브 등 창업시설 중심으로 42개 대, 중견기업과 213개 스타트업 간 오픈이노베이션을 지원해 기술제휴 100건 및 포스코, 애쓰오일 등 대기업의 직접투자 (총 91억원)을 이끌어냈습니다. 또한 정부는 창조경제혁신센터를 통해 중견기업 및 대기업과 스타트업 사이의 오픈 이노베이션을 장려하는 프로그램을 실시하고 있습니다. 오픈 이노베이션 확산을 위해 기획한 서울창업허브를 통해 2020년 오디오 AI 솔루션 스타트업인 코클리어닷에이아이는 메르세데스-벤츠 모기업인 다임러 독일 본사와 기술제휴 비밀유지협약 (NDA)를 이끌어 내기도 했습니다.

Open Innovation and the Future of South Korea’s DeepTech Industry
South Korea’s DeepTech market has secured a high level of competitiveness through consistent R&D investments. However, relying solely on R&D is not enough to gain a competitive advantage on the global stage, where leaders like the U.S. and Europe still dominate. Several Korean companies are addressing this challenge through “open innovation.” Open innovation is a way of development that departs from the traditional closed R&D (Research and Development) approach and embraces C&D (Connect and Development) model, allowing companies to share their knowledge with external partners and advance their technology without the burden of additional investments. In this final week of our four-part blog series about DeepTech, let us explore South Korea’s environment for open innovation in DeepTech industry and how South Korean DeepTech companies are utilizing this.
The Open Innovation Landscape in South Korea
Semiconductors: SK Hynix, under its Future Technology Institution, has recently launched an official website for the Revolutionary Technology Center (RTC). RTC was established last year as a research organization with a long-term perspective aimed at exploring advanced technologies essential for the semiconductor industry’s ecosystem. The RTC website shares in-depth insights about three key research directions pursued by the company. For example, under the “Beyond Memory” category on the website, you can find innovative technologies that will revolutionize the memory semiconductor industry.
AI: The AI sector is currently one of the most active fields for open innovation worldwide. South Korea has also embraced the C&D approach in AI field. Following the visit of OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman on June 9th, the Minister of SMEs and Startups has posted on her facebook page that it had been agreed to conduct open innovation programs between OpenAI and Korean AI startups.
South Korean Government’s Effort to Foster Open Innovation
The South Korean government is actively working on various fronts to promote open innovation across large corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises, and startups. According to the official website of the Seoul City, Seoul has been supporting open innovation between 42 large and medium-sized enterprises and 213 startups, mainly centered around startup facilities like Seoul Startup Hub Gongdeok and Seoul Bio Hub. This has led to 100 technology partnerships and direct investments by major corporations like POSCO and ATU Oil (total KRW 9.1 billion). Moreover, the government, through the Korea Creative Economy Innovation Center, has been running programs that encourage open innovation between medium-sized enterprises, large corporations, and startups. Through these efforts and initiatives such as the Seoul Startup Hub, in 2020, audio AI solution startup CoClear.ai successfully secured Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) for technology collaboration with Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz.
The continuous R&D investments and initiatives to promote open innovation between South Korean conglomerates such as Samsung, LG, Aekopro, and SK, along with the government’s support programs, showcase the explosive growth potential of South Korea’s DeepTech industry.
